Juan Salazar, candidate for next World Committee visited Uruguay on a mission as liaison person for Central Branch in order to inform an enthusiast group of former Scouts and Guides.

Visit to Fraternidad de Antiguos Scouts y Guias del Uruguay (FASGU)

In December 2007 this group of former Scouts and Guides was constituted in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. In 2008 inquiries were made in order to incorporate themselves to the International Scout and Guide Fellowship (ISGF).

Leny Doelman, Central Branch Coordinator, provided them with an information kit and she asked Juan Salazar, member of the National Scout and Guide Fellowship in Chile, to assist her to do the follow-up. Juan offered to visit them to inform them about the requirements, benefits and significance in order to become member of ISGF.

Press Conference

A visit was arranged between the 9th and the 14th of April where various meetings and activities took place in Montevideo where, on the 10th a press conference was held to expose FASGU as a Central Branch unit in Uruguay. Also a meeting was arranged in the city of Juan Lacaze with the idea of given an impulse to the many adults interested and to organize a group in that city regarding the numerous contingent of adults who are in an organized group of Former Scouts since long time.
Juan was accompanied by Fernando Villalobos, also member of a Chilean guild as a way to demonstrate how really a National Scout and Fellowship works, how natural Scout Spirit is and to support them in the beginning of their adventure. Exchange of experiences started, questions were answered and the way of being organized and how they could be linked to ISGF. They were informed from all aspects related to the structure of ISGF.

Juan Lacaze city

After that meeting they moved to the city of Juan Lacaze, two hours away from Montevideo, and end up in a meeting with a scout group of this town. In the opportunity they participated at the closing ceremony of their day activities with all children, boy and girls of that scout group. At the occasion they repeated the previous day conference at Montevideo with enthusiast participants to join FASGU as a guild. It is necessary to remark the enthusiasm of people that attended the meeting and they hope the motivation has been sufficiently strong to make them think to incorporate soon to FASGU. In Juan Lacaze city they visited a small square honouring Lord Baden Powell

Conclusions

Considering the idiosyncrasy of each country, each nationality, It can be concluded that the form how Uruguay has faced its organization, starting from a big group with many aspirations and big achievements, they are on the right track to a proper path and briefly they will consolidate its National organization, attached to the principles of ISGF and its structure and statutes. They have a great sense of unity and identification with scouting. Disciplined, methodical and very inspired. Their great scout spirit is strongly noticeable and its preparation is evident. Although it is certain they have advanced very quickly since they intended to make this group in December 2007, with a total members of 43 people in Montevideo only, and with a listing of many other interested individuals plus the group in Juan Lacaze city, they have understood that now that they already know more about the organization and the form of being linked internationally they will work to lay the foundation for a NSGF to last for the future.

We celebrated it with paper balloons at night. Each group member in Argentina had a meeting at 10 pm in parka and all groups sent beautiful messages in papers balloons. Then we had dinner to celebrate our Anniversary!

Five years maybe is not too much, but it was very important for us to begin this trip. Now after 5 years of hard work, we are ready to became a National Fellowship on the World Conference in Austria.

Hope to see you all in Austria.

What I have seen during my stay in South America (Chile, Argentina and Ecuador) besides natural beauty, interesting cities and archaeological sites is the enthusiasm of our members on this southern continent.

Chile is working towards full membership and Argentina is growing very fast with members in different cities. They are working very hard towards associate or full membership. We have discussed the possibilities and they have taken the challenge with both hands. We are looking forward to welcome them.

The Interamerican Scout Conference in Quito, Ecuador, was a very tough conference where many resolutions were handled. ISGF was given much attention and we certainly opened their eyes when they watched the Scout & Guide Spirit Flame presentation. I received a long applause for this biggest project ever in ISGF history. In Ecuador we have only one member with whom I had a telephone call and he told me that he is working in excellent cooperation with the National Scout Organization.

I want to thank our members in Chile, Argentina and Ecuador with whom I had contact or spent some time. It was really very nice to have met you and build up the relationship and to have seen the enthusiasm of being a member of our organization.

Today we reached 2000 visits threshold. In less than one month! It means that our site is very popular. We have 50-150 visits per day, but on the other hand, we as a global movement, don't have news, articles from all parts of the world. This should be changed.

We are looking for reporters!

Idea is to have at least one reporter in every NSGF country and CB group, who will regularly contribute news, invitations to events, projects, twinning, interesting things in scouting/guiding , ... to our new site. Goal is to have fresh news on the site at least every three days.

We are looking for people who can write articles. Short, interesting, attractive texts about scouting/guiding. With one nice photo. Let's make adult scouting/guiding visible.

We will give you special "status of author" of this site and after approval you will be able to publish your own texts. Welcome!

Daniel Scarlato, active scout and webmaster of nice Argenina's CB group website has given us good example. He is looking for reporter from his country now. I am sure that he will find somebody. Thanks Daniel!

Interested or any questions? Please contact: ales.cerin(at)skavt.net or Skype: alescerin.

One thing more: spread the voice about our new site with all means (mouth to mouth, on your sites, on your blogs, in your magazines, ...). Thanks.

Leny Doelman, member of World Committee, on her way to the Western Hemisphere WOSM Regional Conference is now in Cordoba, Argentina, and she was welcomed by the Scouts y Guias Adultos de Argentina.

In the meantime we have driven more than 4.000 kilometers. It is very hot in Cordoba, around 33 degrees Celsius. The "Scouts y Guias Adultos de Argentina" welcomed her and showed the city. We also had a dinner meeting with some members of neighboring cities today as they had a formal meeting and they elected a new chairman.

This fast growing organisation is still a member of Central Branch but is working very hard to obtain more members in order to become a National Scout and Guide Fellowship in the near future.

They are supporting the National scout and guide organisations and for the centenary of Scouting they placed a special monument in a park with a bust of Lord Baden-Powell. Tree planting is also one of their projects.

Greetings from Leny (on her way back to Chile for taking the plane to Quito, Ecuador on Friday Nov. 23.)

To be continued in Ecuador.

How do you turn a scantly filled two-page resume into a abundant one-page resume?
Trick question

How do you turn a scantly filled two-page resume into a abundant one-page resume?

Trick question!? No, it is just a question that requires some thoughtful consideration and some handy computer skills that you will be able to use for a lifetime.

Well, today I am going to use a real life example that I encountered today. This person had a resume that she was trying to submit online to a job bank. The person who she was working with before she came here told her that she needed to redo her resume because there was a huge gap between sections on her resume. Needless to say this lady didn't want to do this and I don't blame her. First of all, there is no need to redo a resume because there is a gap within the resume. You simply make changes to the document so that there isn't a gap anymore. So here are some tips and tricks you can use to make a two page resume into a one page resume.

Check the size of your font. The standard size font for most business papers is a size 12. If it is larger than a size 12 then shrink it to a size 12. You will find that this will help in the majority of cases. Sometimes, though, the changing of the font size does not make any difference. On to tip 2 then...

Change your font style. Sometimes even though your font size is on size 12, different fonts will appear smaller even though they are the same size. Take in mind, though, that you don't want something totally outlandish for a resume. Keep in tame but look for a font that could possibly make the entire body of the resume smaller.

You could also try condensing your resume body by eliminating anything that could possibly be left unsaid. Today, I was not successful in doing that but for some people you might find something that could be eliminated.

Change your margins, if they can be changed.

With this last tip make sure that your formatting symbols are showing. For formatting symbol, resize each one until you get all your information on that one page.

By using a combination of all the above mentioned methods we were successful in making a two page resume into one page. Now I would not try this with a resume that clearly had enough information to fill two pages. This particular persons resume was just a "tiny, tiny" bit over the one page. In this particular case we were able to help her and send her away very happy.

Stay tuned for more helpful tips.

As most of you know there are many USB Drives to choose from. In recent weeks, we have discovered a USB drive that has U3 software attached to the drive. Why the big fuss? Well, as it turns out, by having this feature on the drive the USB drive becomes useless at a Birmingham Public Library. Here's the scoop on why U3 is a problem:

"Recently, flash drive manufacturers have been adding pre-installed software to some USB flash drives. These pre-installed applications are executed directly from specially formatted USB flash drives. One example of this added software is U3 “smart” software.
By design, U3 software attempts to install a virtual drive on computer systems when inserted so that it can run a U3 program manager. The library does not allow users have to have administrative privileges to add or re-configure software on library machines. For this reason, USB flash drives with U3 or similar software will not function on our public access computers."

In summary, if you have a drive like the one mentioned above you will need to remove the U3 software from it in order to use the USB on any of the library's public computers. To remove the software from the USB, you will need to use a removal tool which is downloadable from www.u3.com . Once the software is removed you will be able to use your USB drive normally on any PC. As staff members, we are not able to remove this software from your drive.
